Friends of Deddington Library (Deddington News)

First of all, a very happy New Year to all. I hope you had a fabulous festive break. We’d like to thank everyone who supported our photo competition and calendar last year. Entries were up and the quality of pictures always impresses us. Our sincere thanks to our loyal and valued sponsors who make it possible to produce such a high quality calendar, the hundreds of you who buy the calendar each year and the army of talented photographers who traverse our parish for new angles and spectacular vistas. You’re all a key component of making our calendar possible and keeping our valued library open, so take a bow and thank you. Keep taking those pics as we’ll be opening our entries again in March for this year’s competition. The likely deadline will be early August. Bryn Williams abw@brynwilliams.com

Deddington Library (Deddington News)

With 2024 now in full swing, I have had a busy few weeks catching up with our Christmas returns and it’s been wonderful catching up with all my readers. The Christmas Book challenge went well with some very happy children and adults who completed it, receiving certificates and rewards. In the library we have jigsaws for anyone to borrow. You don’t have to be a member to borrow them. If anyone has any children’s puzzles they no longer need, please consider donating them to the library and also 250 piece puzzles. When you recycle padda bags, please could I have them for the library? I have exciting news regarding a new display for the library so watch this space. A happy new year to everyone. Friends News

As Christmas approaches, what better way to support our wonderful library and share the beautiful scenes from our parish with friends and family than buying one of the few remaining library calendars. We’ve nearly sold out of our A5 calendars and have a handful more of the A4 calendars remaining, so get yours now before they’re gone. We’re likely to sell out before the December farmers’ market so we won’t have a stall there but you can get yours from Nellie & Dove, Hamptons, Fenemore’s Farm Shop and, of course, the library itself. If you can’t get to any of the retailers before Christmas, we’ll get a calendar to you; just call Julia Cork on 07881 438930. The Friends have been grateful recipients of two donations from community organisations, the farmers’ market and the parish show, as well as contributions this month from two parish residents. We are grateful for everyone’s continued support, be it through donations, buying books, cards or our calendar. As the festive season and the end of another year approaches, we’d like to thank one and all for your support and wish you a happy and peaceful Christmas with family and friends and a healthy and joyful new year!

Library News

The library is looking for two volunteers to help with Rhymetime starting in the new year. This involves singing nursery rhymes with toddlers and babies and their mothers for half an hour on a Monday every few weeks, on a rota basis. Please pop into the library for more information. I had great pleasure in returning to the primary school recently to hand out the certificates and medals from the summer reading challenge. It was a great success with almost 100 children taking part and an excellent 85% completion rate. Thank you to the parents for encouraging their children to take part. My follow-on challenge, for both children and adults, of 20 books before Christmas is still ongoing. The Friends of the Library’s 2024 calendar is on sale in the library – as well as at the December farmers’ market, Nellie and Dove and Hampton’s. It makes a lovely Christmas present and the proceeds help keep the library open. Please note: the library will close on 23 December at 1.00pm and will re-open on Wednesday 3 January 2024 at 9.30am. Wishing all my readers a very happy Christmas and a blessed New Year.

Friends News

The Friends held our annual AGM recently, at which, the trustees & Committee were confirmed in post for another year and we welcomed our new treasurer Jennie Clarke and our Social media/website Guru, Sharon Greenwood to the team.

The Friends continue to thrive and raise money to support retaining our wonderful library for our community.

The Parish calendar photo competition was very well subscribed with record entries, the quality of the images continue to impress us and choosing the winning 12 was as difficult as ever. We did however end up with a fabulous selection of 12 photos and for the first time, also chose an entrant’s photo as our front cover. This, along with three others were selected as the most popular by our Committee and were presented with a printed canvas of their photos at the calendar launch at the Holly Tree Hall on the 22nd September. This was a lovely gathering where the calendar sponsors, winning photo entrants and committee got together to see the calendar in print for the first time, make presentations to the photo entrants and thank the sponsors for their generosity in supporting the Friends and production of the calendar.

The public calendar launch was the following morning at the September Farmers Market. It was a very busy morning, with calendars selling like hot cakes and complimentary comments from everyone, so get yours before they sell out!

The calendar is also available from the library, Nellie and Dove and the Fenemore Farm Shop from now until the new year, so hurry and get yours today. We have a limited print run, when they’re gone, they’re gone! We’re also at the October and November Farmers Markets and can take card payments at the market but cash in all other outlets. Thank you for your continued support!

Library News

After a visit to Deddington school at the end of term I introduced the start of the Summer reading challenge “Ready Set read!” encouraging the children to read throughout the summer. This has been a great success with many children completing the challenge. I will be returning to school to present certificates and medals.

Following on from this I have set another challenge for children to read 20 books between

1st Oct and 24th Dec, this is also open to any brave adults.

Another adventure is we have a travelling Piano Keyboard available for the public to play including music. The only stipulation if there are people using the computers the piano will be switched off. It also comes with headphones.

So feel free to come and have a go, It will be with us until end of January 2024.

I am Looking forward to selling the Deddington Calendars and we also have some Deddington library mugs, Postcards and notelets. Some local publications like “A parish at War” by Rob Forsyth & Michael Albrook, “As I Remember” by George Harris, “The Diaries of William Cotton Risley”, “Not only the Good Boys” by Jo Eames, and a few of Linda Newbery (our patron) books for you to buy!

These all make very good birthday and Christmas presents.
